Hello and happy holidays! Here is a Christmas themed children’s animation that introduces different fruits and vegetables. Santa Claus and Rudolph enjoy fruits and vegetables too!
This is our very first attempt at creating a children’s animation that introduces different fruits and vegetables.
what inspired these fruits and vegetables children’s animations
I was finishing the semester with a community nutrition class, which inspired me to create a digital form of nutrition education. Throughout the class, we discussed many public health topics related to environmental factors that shape our lifestyles, including the possible effects of food product advertising on our purchase decisions.
This seems especially apparent when it comes to advertising targeted towards young children because of many factors that I briefly discuss on our faq page.
our initial goals for healthyfeels
We wanted to create an online resource that provides information and tools to:
- help new parents incorporate a balanced diet into family meals
- try and entice you to cook and eat together more, and
- counteract big company food product advertisements targeted towards children
So, we thought, if these large corporations are spending tons of money on advertisements, then shouldn’t more people try to create content that celebrates diverse foods (such as fruits and vegetables)?
This led us to a flurry of brainstorm sessions on how we can create fun animations for kids that introduce different fruits and vegetables.
Additionally, we wanted to create instructive cooking videos that entice the senses, to hopefully inspire more family cooking activities and family meals. You can see our cooking videos by browsing any of our recipes.
the story behind our first animated story for kids
Since it was December and the holiday season was approaching, we thought it would be different to show Santa Claus enjoying fruits and vegetables too, and not just cookies and milk on Christmas Eve.
After creating more animations, I realized we made some big mistakes with this first video. It’s a delicate balance between gently promoting nutrition and sending negative messages that can affect someone’s relationship with food and their body image.
Despite how media often portrays what “healthy” means, we believe that healthy is different for everyone. Health should encompass not only physical health, but also psychological, emotional, and spiritual health, so we want to do better at the messages we send.
an update on our first animation
We have since then modified the original video to take out messages that we thought may be problematic. If you have any story ideas for us, leave a comment and let us know. We would love to hear your creative ideas!
tips for engaging with your kids when watching videos together
Try playing “name that fruit or veggie” game with your little ones when watching this animation with them or ask them what they think will happen next. It’s a great way to interact with each other and bond!

behind the scenes storyboard illustrations for the
santa and rudolph christmas animation
We started off with a script. Then, we drew a rough sketch of the characters and the storyline.
These are the storyboard illustrations that were needed prior to the start of the animation.
